April Zoom Talk - The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie

It is customary to invite our Ladies to join us for lunch in April so although we were unable to meet in person it was most encouraging that we had over twenty members and their ladies in attendance for a most fascinating Zoom talk about Agatha Christie by Mark Temple

I knew she had written a large number of stories but was amazed to discover that Agatha Christie was the third best selling author in English after the Bible and Shakespeare. Mark was careful not to give any spoilers as to 'who done-it' in his review of her key detectives, Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, but was able to explain how her middle and upper class scenarios reflected the life style that she herself lived.

I can't remember what was her favourite method of dispatching the victim but it was interesting to discover that the inclusion of several Egyptian artefacts in her stories was because she was a keen archaeologist and went on several expeditions to the Middle East.

I have to admit that I never actually read any of her books but after Mark's entertaining talk I am sure I will be spending many hours watching Joan Hickson and David Suchet solve all those dreadful crimes.

Under normal circumstances we would not have had the opportunity to listen to Mark's excellent talk as he lives too far away to come down for an after lunch session, but the wonders of Zoom have allowed our Speaker's Secretary Geoff Pope to seek far and wide for our continued entertainment. Keep it it up Geoff.

Many thanks again to Mark Temple for a most entertaining talk.
