December Zoom Talk - The Lady with the Lamp

This month we had 22 members in attendance on Zoom, many accompanied by their wives for a very different Christmas Lunch. Our speaker Major(Retd) Paul Whittle gave us an excellent talk on "The Lady with the Lamp" - The Florence Nightingale Story.

Rightly acknowledged as the founder of modern nursing, the achievements of this remarkable Victorian lady extend far beyond her contribution in the Crimean War. Hospital design, the first secular nursing school and the introduction of a national midwifery service are just a few examples of her tireless work to improve standards of public health provision.

Paul’s talk covered an overview of her life, the people and places associated with her, and a look at the Crimea of today with a visit to a formerly top-secret Soviet submarine bunker.

I think we should all plan a trip to the Florence Nightingale Museum at St Thomas' Hospital, it could be well worth a small group outing sometime in the New Year.

We look forward to welcoming Paul again to a proper lunch at Cuddington when things return to normal. Full details of Paul’s extensive range of talks can be found at www.travellertales.net
