February 2020 Lunch

This month we celebrated Reg Jeffries' ninetieth birthday with the usual presentation of a bottle of bubbly from Chairman John Gilbert, followed by Past Chairman David May presenting Reg with a special Probus Club Badge to mark his twenty five years membership of Cheam Probus Club. Well done Reg and many thanks for not only your Chairmanship but also for spending so many other years working on the Committee and helping Cheam Probus prosper.

After a hearty lunch of Braised Steak Jardinière and a 'Sozzled' Berries and Ice Cream Dessert, our Treasurer Philip Wilkins presented the Club Accounts for 2019. It was a successful year and although we always aim to 'break-even' we made another small surplus to bring our Club Funds to a record high. Phil explained that we will probably dip into our funds to celebrate our Fiftieth Anniversary in 2022. He thanked our Accounts Examiner Roger Mills for his help in once again making sure the figures balanced. Roger is standing down after eight years as Accounts Examiner and Chairman John Gilbert was pleased to present Roger with a pen as a token of the Club thanks and to mark his retirement.

Our after lunch talk was given by James Dickinson who gave us a comprehensive history of Rochester's Castle and Cathedral. It appears that they both played an important role in several of the key events in England's history, and the characters involved included many well known names from our history lessons, Gundulf, Thomas Cranmer, King John and Archbishop Stephen Langton and more. Although I only knew of Stephen Langton from the excellent pub down in Friday Street!!

Thank you James, we will have to add Rochester as a place to visit in the future.
