We started the year with a talk by Jim Barnes on the Peoples Vulcan Bomber. Jim had been scheduled to present his talk in person last year so we were very pleased when we heard that he was able to offer a Zoom presentation instead. Over twenty members enjoyed an informative and entertaining lecture on the Vulcan Bomber a key element of the UK's V-Force of the Fifties and Sixties.
Jim had spent several years flying in Vulcan Bombers during the Cold War as an Electronics Officer and was able to give us not only a detailed account of the development of this extraordinary aircraft but also a first hand insight into the trials and tribulations of the five man crew, who were aloft for many hours in a very cramped space. I can vouch for the cramped conditions having climbed up into the cockpit of the Vulcan at The Midland Air Museum a few years back (see photo below).
The Vulcan was an amazing aircraft and could perform manoeuvres which I thought were only for smaller fighters and we were treated to footage of the Vulcan XH558 which was kept airworthy from 2008 until 2015 performing at air shows around the country.
Many thanks Jim, a most enjoyable talk about an iconic aircraft.
