We set out to Eltham on one of the hottest days of the year, thankfully our coach was air-conditioned and we arrived even before the gates had opened. A hot coffee on arrival set us up for the tour around the gardens, which were magnificent and although there was not much shade the cooling breeze blowing up from the Thames helped as we made our way slowly through the moat and rose gardens. Our guide was most helpful and even had sunscreen on hand!
Lunch was rather tasty but being served in the greenhouse in the sun meant that we didn't linger very long and very few of us waited for coffee!
The house built by the Courtaulds is a fine example of Art Deco design from the thirties, but unfortunately air-conditioning was not one of the new features, so I think some of us were more concerned with our own well-being than taking onboard the lifestyle of the wealthy socialites and their pet lemur Mah-Jong! Definitely worth a return visit but when the temperature is ten degrees cooler.
