This month's lunch was a grilled pork escalope with a herb crust, creamy grain mustard sauce and vegetables followed by a sticky toffee pudding and custard, very satisfying and we didn't need much to eat in the evening!
Our after lunch speaker was Brian Angus and his talk was entitled “Angus alphaBet aneCdotes”. Brian offered us twenty six anecdotes about his very full and interesting life and connections and having set his timer to twenty six minutes and gathered plenty of props asked us to choose a letter of the alphabet to start. First up was Z for Zoom, a life saver for the Mayors of Epsom & Ewell and others during the Covid times having to miss out on all the personal visits and meals during their time in office! Next was F for Family Tree. Brian had researched his family but not content with drawing up the tree on a computer made it into a printed scroll complete with photos, the earliest from 1818!
Our next choice of letter X caused Brian to admit he had to cheat, with X for Customs & Excise! Brian worked as a VAT officer for 25 years and could have spent far more than a minute recounting his experiences.
G for Glyn Hall which Brian is involved with its re-building was followed by Q for Queen who unsurprisingly Brian had met but not whilst M for Mayor of Epsom and Ewell at D for Derby as she was away that year and guest of honour was Lester Piggott.
Further highlights were P for Portugal, he'd been there and got the T-Shirt, W for Water as incorporated in the Epsom & Ewell Logo (the Spring now topped-up by SES water) and of course L for Lego or rather Technical Lego and Brian's magnificent trucks.
We didn't quite manage to get through the whole alphabet only missing E, H and V. Brian told me afterwards that E was for Ewell West Station and of course he had model railway carriages to show.
Many thanks Brian for a most enjoyable talk and for keeping everyone awake after our hearty lunch.
