May 2023 Lunch Report

Our Chairman Michael Fisk was pleased to welcome two potential new members to the May lunch and hopefully next month's lunch report will include photos of him presenting both with their brown envelopes as full members of Cheam Probus Club.

I'm sure the meal of Grilled trout fillet, crushed new potatoes, French beans and hollandaise sauce, followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding and Vanilla Ice-cream will have convinced them of dining benefits of joining

and the stimulating after lunch talk entitled "Making Life's Decisions" by John Small will have convinced them of the intellectual benefits!

John Small first worked in the technology industry with ICL and Fujitsu before moving into international finance with HSBC where he was involved with the running of their Future of Retirement Research Programme and which was the inspiration for the formation of his company EML in 2010.

John explained the significant changes that have taken place in life expectancy over the last fifty or more years and described how longevity is impacting on us all. The increase in world population is causing problems for government planning particularly in areas of health and social services. We current retirees are in a fortunate position as we have the benefits of free health care and state pension but future generations are expected to be working well into their seventies or even eighties. It was interesting to discover that the sixty five year state pension threshold originated from Bismark who devised it as a government saving idea, as the life expectancy was then only forty seven! If we continued with his idea our current pension age should be over ninety seven.

John highlighted some of the problems facing those who are living longer and whilst joining Cheam Probus can't help solve all of them I'm sure we can assist with many of the items shown above.

Thank you John for a thought provoking talk, you certainly had lots of questions from the members. If you are interested in knowing more about John's work visit his website https://www.edwardmiln.com
