The May lunch was held on a warm and sunny day, so warm that many members removed their jackets to keep cool. Before lunch was served, there was a round of applause as the Chairman presented one of our members with a bottle of claret to mark his reaching the age of 80.
The lunch itself consisted of grilled lightly spiced chicken, tomatoes, asparagus and pea shoots with balsamic dressing, followed by apple tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream.
After the meal and Club announcements, including a reminder that the June lunch would be the Jubilee Lunch at Kingswood Golf Club, members repositioned their chairs for the talk. Our guest speaker for the day was one of our members, Chris Cuss, who gave a talk on “Surrey and the Motor Industry”. Chris soon banished any ideas that there was no such industry in this county, with the fact there were 120 car manufacturers in Surrey. Chris then proceeded to focus on twelve of them, ranging from Tamplin cyclecars, manufactured in Cheam in 1924 and 1925; to Jack Brabham’s revolutionary Formula 1 cars with a their engine at the rear, made in Chessington; to Dennis Bros Ltd, at Guildford until 2020, making buses (including those on our own 470 route) and specialist vehicles such as fire engines and dust carts, to use an old-fashioned term for today’s high-tech vehicles. Chris’ talk was very informative and much enjoyed by all.
