The October lunch consisted of homemade fish pie with seasonal vegetables, followed by a dessert of date, walnut and caramel cake with custard. The speaker was Mark Lewis on the subject of “The World of Art Deco”.
With the aid of his slides, Mark showed how Art Deco had permeated life between the wars from the domestic, in the form of tea sets, to grand projects such as the Chrysler Building in New York, and explained the influences shaping it, including the Bauhaus movement with its clean lines and the mantra of form following function; new art movements such as cubism; and, not least, the cinema and a mood which celebrated modern technology and materials such as plastic. Mark finished his talk by pointing out that while the heyday and opulence of Art Deco may have been cut short by the Second World War, it has survived and still influences designers today. After questions from the floor, he received a well-deserved round of applause.
