Attendance this month was one of the best so far this year, maybe because long time member Robert Ruddell was giving the after lunch talk.
Lunch was a very enjoyable Fillet of Seam Bream followed by a Raspberry & White Chocolate Cheesecake
Robert's talk was about the characters who had been involved with the Walton Heath Golf Club and their impact on the Walton-on-the-Hill community and indeed the life of the Nation since its formation in 1903.
The course as designed by Herbert Fowler and funded by Sir Cosmo Bonsor, Chairman of the South Eastern Railway and Watney Combe Brewery. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII was a member and the first Captain in 1935. Four Prime Ministers were members, AJ Balfour, Lloyd George, Bonar Law and Winston Churchill. Apart from the politicians there were plenty of Industrialists, Businessmen and Newspaper Proprietors, Frederick Bowater (Paper Makers), Richard Costain (Builders), George Riddell and Emsley Carr (News of the World). Also several of the houses built around Walton were designed by another member Sir Edwin Lutyens, no wonder it's a great place to live.
Thank you Robert, it appears that Walton Heath Golf Club has played an important part in the development of our Country, there must have been very many interesting conversations out on the course over the years!
