Attendance in October was lower than usual but Chairman John Goodhead was pleased to welcome the President of Ewell Probus Joe Shackell to join us for an excellent lunch of French trimmed Breast of Chicken with Ricotta & Spinach, Roasted New Potatoes & Seasonal Veg followed by a Butterscotch Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream.
Our after-lunch talk was entitled "What is the World Coming to" and our speaker Ken Hobbs, Anglican Minister at St Paul's , Howell Hill and retired geography teacher offered some insight into the problems facing us in the 21st Century.
Ken considered six problem areas, starting with the major one of population growth in the last century.
Next up was the closely related concept of Resource Depletion as formulated in the early 19th century by Thomas Malthus, before moving on to the more recent concerns of Runaway Technology (anyone remember Alvin Toffler and Future Shock?), Climate Change, Planned Obsolescence and the seemingly unstoppable growth of Global poverty and inequality.
Fortunately Ken was not all gloom and doom, making sure to end on a positive faith-based vision of Hope.
Thank you Ken for an enlightening talk and for keeping us awake with plenty of quips from your school and church careers.
