October 21 Lunch Report

It was very encouraging to see so many of our members back around the table to enjoy a lunch of braised steak and mash followed by apple crumble and ice cream. Once again Chairman John Gilbert was handing over a bottle, this time to John Goodhead to belatedly celebrate his eightieth birthday in July.

After lunch we welcomed back Bob Sinfield to entertain us with his talk entitled "Blast from the Past - Colourful Characters, Edison, Darwin and Pepys". After a brief introduction from Geoff Pope , Bob strode into the dining room in character as Samuel Pepys, complete with diary, quill pen and flowing locks!

We were then treated to some words of wisdom from the great man's diary interspersed with some background knowledge of the events taking place at the time. Bob went on to explain how as an actor he had enjoyed playing real characters as opposed to fictional ones, or at least he did once he realised that there were no recordings of their voices to compare with his! Discarding his golden curls he then picked up Darwin's pith hat and proceeded to recount his adventures on the Beagle and formulation of 'The Origin of Species', before finally donning Thomas Edison's top hat and explaining the many 'light-bulb' moments of America's greatest inventor. Thank you Bob, it was good to see you in person again.

This was our best attendance so far this year and we hope more will be able to join us next month, especially as it will be our AGM as well.
