Outing to Chatham Historic Dockyard 8th May

Setting off at 9 am from our usual departure point St Andrews Church our driver Chris got us to the Historic Dockyard at Chatham in plenty of time to enjoy our coffee and danish pastry before getting back on board for a slow ride through the dockyard with our guide to tell us all about the history of the Dockyard and to point out the key places to visit later in the day.

Getting off the coach at the far end of the dockyard we were soon ready for our demonstration of rope-making in the quarter-mile long Ropery Building.

After our noisy rope-making display we had time to explore the rope shop and museum before heading back for lunch of Fish and Chips at the Mess Deck Restaurant.

After lunch it was for many the highlight of the outing, a tour of the Call the Midwife locations in the company of a 'Midwife' guide.

For those not acquainted with the Midwife series, there were plenty of exhibition spaces and ships to explore

and some more able-bodied and flexible members embarked on a tour around submarine HMS Ocelot.

There was not a lot of room for the sailors who spent 3 months aboard this spy submarine, I found it difficult for the twenty minutes we were aboard!

After an exhausting afternoon walking and climbing around the Dockyard we returned back to the Mess Deck for a quick cup of coffee before boarding our coach for the journey home., Once again our driver Chris made sure the traffic jams were on the other side of the motorway and we got back in quick time!
