September Zoom Talk and a Visit to Painshill Park

September saw the first of our Zoom after-lunch talks. Just over a third of the members were able to join in a Lunchtime Zoom Session, complete with the usual natter amongst friends before Chairman John Gilbert proposed the Loyal Toast, followed by the Toast to our Cheam Probus Club. Geoff Pope introduced our Speaker, Bob Sinfield who kept us entertained for the next forty minutes with his talk on George Chisholm, the Scottish Jazz Legend. I had expected to hear snippets of George's music output but what we got was an hilarious account of George's life as a trombonist with a variety of bands including Bert Ambrose's Dance Band, the RAF 'Squadronaires' and the BBC Showband. I was laughing all the way through Bob's talk and it was such a shame that he was unable to hear his audience's response as we all had to be muted during the session. Thank you Bob, let's hope that at your next talk we can see you in person at Cuddington Golf Club.

The day following our lunch, eight intrepid couples met up at Painshill Park for the second and regrettably the final outing of the year. As usual Norman Rodda our Social Secretary had ordered fine weather and an excellent introductory talk about the magnificent seventeenth century gardens before we set off in socially distanced small groups to explore the artistic landscape at every turn of the winding paths.

Everyone enjoyed a relaxing walk in the morning sun, with several venturing around the 2.5 mile historic trail to the far corners of the park and down to the Tower by the noisy A3.

John and Julie Pembrey found their way to the hidden Hermitage in the distant corner of the Park and were surprised to find the Hermit and Dairy Maid still in residence!

After our walks we returned to the garden cafe for a well earned rest and some excellent home-made lunchtime snacks. Before heading home there was the obligatory stop at the Painshill Shop to help support the work of this excellent garden trust. It was a most enjoyable day out, we shall return again soon.
